ATEX EExd HART® position transmitters approved for use in new refining and petrochemical complex in Saudi Arabia

K Controls 007 EExd Control Monitors have been approved for use on control valves in a new integrated refining and petrochemical complex in Saudi Arabia. The complex will produce approximately a million tons of ethylene and propylene every year. Front-end engineering and design is being carried out in Japan. K Controls products were recommended by our client who is a UK based specialist manufacturer of control valves. The 007 EExd Control Monitors will be supplied in two configurations: Switchboxes complete with hermetically sealed magnetically operated reed switches and HART® position transmitters. The units are certified for use at 80 degrees C and are therefore are suitable for use in the high ambient temperatures that are experienced in the region.

Compact integrated Control Monitors replace separate switches and solenoids on valve actuators

Available for approximately the same price as a separate switchbox and solenoid, the compact version of the 007C Control Monitor offers end users a number of benefits.

Client connection of switches and solenoid is quicker and more economical. One of the two interconnecting cables can be eliminated and the pilot solenoid is protected from damage within a robust IP66 polyester resin coated enclosure. The solenoid along with the microswitches, reed switches or proximity switches can be quickly accessed via just two cover screws and the slanting cover design permits easy access to the switch cams. The unit includes a single acting high flow control valve with ¼” BSP.P ports.

To minimise overall dimensions the internal pilot solenoid has been laid on its side so that a low profile cover can be fitted. In addition the high capacity control valve has been moved to the underside of the unit. The compact 007C is fitted to the actuator using a stainless steel mounting kit which is available with or without the plastic visual indicator. The pneumatic connection to the actuator is short and direct.

As with all 007C’s the signals to the switches and solenoid can pass via a single conduit. This makes for a particularly neat installation. The solenoid is close to the actuator and yet protected from impact. Positioning the solenoid close to the actuator gives a faster response because with a remote panel mounted solenoid it takes longer for air to exhaust from the much longer run of interconnecting tubing. Solenoid identification in a remote cabinet can also sometimes be a problem.

The compact 007C is available with a 3/2 valve for single acting actuators. The connections are ¼” BSP and the CV is 0.5. Optional manual override is available on the internal pilot solenoid. Clients sometimes require a solenoid manual override feature during commissioning but are concerned that it could be located and operated by unauthorised personnel during normal plant operation. When the manual override feature is hidden within the enclosure, valves can only be operated manually by trained technicians following the deliberate act of cover removal.

Versions for hazardous areas are ATEX certified II 2 GD EExia for use with both gasses and dusts. Further reductions in the number of cables running between the control room and the valves can be made via the use of remote I/O systems or fieldbus valve couplers. PROFIBUS® and FOUNDATION™ fieldbus compatible versions of the compact 007C use proximity switches that allow 2:1 wiring together with a low powered piezotronic solenoid valve.

ATEX certified position monitors permit rapid disconnection for local testing or valve removal.

K Controls have developed a range of switch and switch terminal boxes complete with robust multi-pin connectors. They permit a complete valve actuator assembly to be quickly removed for servicing, without the intervention of an electrician. Alternatively an actuated valve can be easily tested with a hand held field test box. The design of the 007/007T complete with connector has been reviewed by a Notified Body and a variation to the ATEX EEx ia certificate has been obtained that permits its use in Zones 1,2, 21 and 22 where hazardous gasses or dusts may be present.

This solution has been developed in conjunction with one of our distributors. Their client uses a field test box but was experiencing problems with a competitor’s product. The plastic connectors were failing and the product was not fully ATEX certified. The K Controls solution provides a much more robust connector. In addition, as some areas of the factory can have hazardous gasses present and other areas combustible dusts, the certification allows the same product to be used plant wide. Our distributor wires the actuator mounted solenoid with conventional cable glands via a conduit entry next to the connector in the 007T. This then allows their client to wire both the switches and the solenoid via a single multi-pin connector and cable.
